What Are Sclera Contacts?

Sclera Contacts contact lenses that vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera (the white of the eye). The lens is a rigid gas permeable (RGP) lens that transforms an irregularly shaped cornea into a smooth optical surface. This creates superior comfort, durability and vision for many patients with keratoconus or other corneal conditions.

These specialized lenses are filled with preservative-free artificial tears before inserting into the eye. The tears stay in the bowl of the lens during wear – bathing the cornea in tears throughout the day to combat dry eyes. Many of our Charlotte dry eye patients find that they are able to wear their scleral lenses without discomfort for long periods of time.

The larger size of a scleral contact lens can help reduce the risk of complications that can be associated with soft contact lenses such as bifocals, movement, irritation and poor deposit resistance. These lenses also provide increased durability and resistance to water penetration.

During the contact lens fitting process, it is important to make sure that there is sufficient clearance of the lens to avoid the risk of complications like conjunctival blanching where the lens can rub against the front of the cornea compressing and impinging blood vessels. This can lead to redness, irritation and rebound hyperemia. Providing adequate clearance of the lens around the limbus will prevent these complications. This can sometimes delay or eliminate the need for surgical intervention.
