What is Wetpour Surface?
Wetpour Surface is an impact absorbing playground surface commonly used in schools, designed to be safe for children and reduce the chance of injury. It can also be used to create multi-use games areas, daily mile tracks and bespoke playground flooring designs.
It is made from a mixture of rubber EPDM granules with a polyurethane binder which is mixed on site and installed wet, creating a flexible and durable surfacing option. This layer can be laid to varying depths depending on the equipment in the area. This is then overlaid with a coloured wear layer of finer rubber granules.
This system is more cost-effective than grass mats, low quality wet pour and bonded rubber mulch safety surfacing and can be made to any shape or design in a variety of colours. It can be used on a range of sub-bases including tarmac, concrete and MOT type 1 stone.
Case Study: Transforming Playgrounds with Wetpour Surfacing
Depending on the thickness of the wetpour chosen and the granules & binder, the product life can range from 6 to 20 years, with minimal maintenance. The surfacing is porous, allowing rainwater to drain through the gaps between granules. However, it is important that the correct drainage system is installed to avoid water pooling and becoming a slip hazard.
Wet pour surfacing is an environmentally friendly choice as it often uses recycled materials, contributing to sustainability and it’s longevity reduces the need for regular replacements. Regular cleaning with a mild detergent and water will help to keep the surface free of debris, whilst periodic inspections should highlight any areas that require immediate attention.
